Under the command of Sgt. Alan Hutcherson, the Gwinnett County police will conduct a multi-faceted safety operation to reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities.
The area around Jimmy Carter Blvd. and S. Norcross-Tucker Rd. is dangerous for pedestrians. Both drivers and pedestrians are to blame. Police will target drivers who fail to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. They'll also target pedestrians who dangerously cross the roadway outside of nearby crosswalks.
The DUI Task Force, Highway Interdiction Team, K-9 Unit and Crime Prevention Unit will also participate in Friday's operation.
PEDS supports this operation by providing training in pedestrian safety enforcement to the police. In partnership with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, PEDS also provides
educational flyers that drivers receive along with their citations.
OTHER INFORMATION:
- Metro Atlanta drivers hit 4 pedestrians every day.
- Pedestrians have the right of way over drivers turning on green.
- Georgia law requires drivers to stop (not just yield) for pedestrians in crosswalks, even when the pedestrian is in another lane.
- Pedestrians should always use crosswalks when they're provided.
